Van Diemen FC (RF03)
One more race car… A modern one this time.
FC stands for "Formula Continental" which is an SCCA class for single seat race cars with 2,000 cc motors. Though having modest horsepower (about 160) these cars weigh only barely over 1,000 lb. and with their wings and sophisticated suspensions they are very quick.
FC and its sibling class F2000 have long been a rung on the professional ladder for aspiring young racers such as J. R. Hildebrand. J. R. came within a whisker of winning the Indy 500 a few years ago before crashing on the last corner of the last lap!
The 2015 SCCA National Championships (the "Runoffs") were held at Laguna Seca and I raced this car. After setbacks in qualifying which had me starting 15th, I fought my way back to 9th and the Hard Charger award.
I still bring it out of the stable occasionally, for SCCA and Pacific F2000 races. This January, I scored my first podium finish in a F2000 race at Auto Club Speedway!
