Porsche 934
This car is one of 31 special race cars which Porsche built in 1976 to compete in the Group 4 category of the FIA World Manufacturers' Championship. #0161 is one of the few cars to have raced in all three major endurance events: Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring. It has had a remarkably long and successful life: about 80 races over a 10 year span in Europe, the US, and Latin America.
It raced in Europe for its first four years, culminating at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1980. It then raced extensively in the US in the IMSA Championship, at places like Daytona, Sebring, Riverside, Laguna Seca, and Road Atlanta. It ended its lengthy career with a podium in one of its last races, the 1986 24 Hours of Daytona.
It was restored at Kremer Brothers in Germany in 2011 to IMSA GTO spec (as raced beginning in 1980). The car is an interesting color, "Hellgelb," which translates simply as "Light yellow" but it looks different in every picture depending on the light. It's a very '70s color with a bit of green in it.
The period photos below include shots of the car racing at Le Mans in 1980. At this point it belonged to a Puerto Rican, Armando "Mandy" González. Mandy took it to Le Mans with Diego Febles, a very famous Cuban racer. I knew Mandy and Diego from hanging around at the race track when I was a teenager growing up in Puerto Rico. Le Mans was very rainy that year and Mandy and Diego were leading their class when they had an accident about 15 hours into the race. One photo shows the car is going through tech inspection – you can see the lower front nose piece is off. Diego's son Tony is in the car. Tony was a teenager at the time and it was a big deal for him! I've been in touch with Tony and he has very kindly sent me photos and reminiscences. As a young car nut growing up in Puerto Rico, this car has special significance for me!
Though modified over the years to remain competitive in IMSA, it was never seriously wrecked or re-tubbed. The car made its post-restoration track debut at the Monterey Reunion in 2015, and shortly after at Rennsport V. It was great fun to meet so many fans with personal connections to the car, that had followed it throughout the years. Some great articles from that debut:
