BMW 3.0 CSL

Like the Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS, the BMW 3.0 CSL was a "homologation special."  A major goal for both BMW and Porsche in the creation of these cars was to trim weight, because the weight of the homologated street version of the car would also become the minimum legal weight for the race cars based on it.  In fact the "L" in "CSL" stood for "Leichtbau," meaning Lightweight.

To save weight BMW used special thin steel, replaced much of the glass with Plexiglass plastic, made bumpers of fiberglass, and used aluminum instead of steel for the panels of the doors, hood, and trunk.

3.0 CSL production may be divided into early Series 1 cars, Series 2, and, the "Batmobile" final series.  My first CSL was this Series 2 car, which I had not restored before it returned to Europe and a home in a new collection.
